Light tinting

Lenses that stop
shouting.

Headlights and tail lights tinted down so the lenses are not the brightest thing on a dark car. A few hours, and it changes the face of the car more than the price suggests.

Ford Mustang GT with smoked tail lights, rear three-quarter

On a black or dark-wrapped car the lights are usually the only bright thing left, and a big red tail lamp cluster pulls the eye straight to it. Tinting them down settles the whole back of the car.

It is film over the lens, not paint and not a dye, so it comes off again and the lens underneath is untouched. The shade is the whole decision: light enough that the lights still do their job and the car still passes, dark enough to be worth doing.

What you can have

How far down is your call.

  • Tail lights

The common job and the one that changes most. A full-width light bar or a three-piece cluster both take film well.

  • Headlights

A lighter shade up front, because the headlight has work to do. Enough to knock the glare off the lens without dimming the beam.

  • Indicators and reflectors

The small orange pieces that tend to be the last bright things left once everything else is done.

  • Removal

Old tint, spray tint or a previous owner's attempt taken off and the lens cleaned back.

How it goes

In and out the same day.

  1. 01

    Clean the lens

Every lens is washed and wiped down. A lens that has been on the road is carrying more than it looks like.

  2. 02

    Cut to shape

Film cut to the lens, allowing for the wrap around the edge so there is no visible line.

  3. 03

    Heat to the curve

Light lenses curve hard. The film is shrunk to that shape before it goes on, which is what stops the creases.

  4. 04

    Fit and cure

Laid, squeegeed and left. A little haze for a few days is normal and clears on its own.

Questions we get asked.

Is tinted lighting legal?

It depends how far you go. Lights still have to do their job and be seen, so there is a point past which a car will not pass. We will tell you where that sits for your car before anything goes on - a defect notice is not worth a shade darker.

Is it film or spray?

Film. Spray tint is permanent, goes blotchy, and there is no way back from it. Film comes off and leaves the lens as it was.

Will it dim my headlights?

A light shade on a headlight is barely measurable. We do not go dark on a headlight, because the point is the look, not driving home in the dark with less light than you need.

How long does it take?

A few hours for most cars, so it is usually a drop off in the morning and pick up the same day.
