Caliper painting

Colour behind
the spokes.

Wheels off, calipers cleaned back and painted in whatever colour you want, in heat-resistant coating that survives what a brake does. Usually in and out the same day.

It is the smallest job in the workshop and it changes how the whole wheel reads. A dark wheel with a bare cast caliper behind it looks unfinished; the same wheel with colour behind it looks deliberate.

The wheels come off, because painting a caliper through the spokes is how you get overspray on a disc and a finish that flakes in a month. Calipers get degreased and prepped, masked off the disc and the pads, and coated in a paint made for the heat a brake actually reaches.

What you can have

Any colour, including the ones nobody expects.

  • Factory red

The safe answer, and the one that looks right on almost anything.

  • Match the car

Picked to the body colour or to an accent already on the car - a stripe, a badge, a brake duct.

  • Something louder

Hot pink, mint, orange. Half the calipers through this workshop are not red, and they are the ones people notice.

  • Badges and lettering

The manufacturer's script picked out in a second colour, or left bare against the new one.

How it goes

Same day, wheels off.

  1. 01

    Up on the hoist

All four wheels off. Nothing about this job is done through a spoke.

  2. 02

    Clean back

Brake dust, road grime and old coating removed, then degreased. Paint over dust is paint that peels.

  3. 03

    Mask

Disc, pads and bleed nipples masked off, so the only thing that gets colour is the caliper.

  4. 04

    Coat and cure

Heat-resistant coating in layers, left to cure before the wheels go back on and get torqued.

Questions we get asked.

Will the paint survive the heat?

It is caliper-specific coating rated well past what a road brake reaches. Ordinary spray paint is not, which is why a DIY job goes brown.

Do you take the calipers off the car?

Not usually. Wheels off and masked on the car is enough for a clean result and it does not involve opening the brake lines.

How long does it last?

Years. It is worth avoiding harsh wheel cleaners - the acidic ones attack the coating faster than the brake ever will.

Can you do drum brakes or the rear on a cheaper car?

Rear calipers, yes. Drums are a different thing and not worth the money - we will say so rather than take it.
